Fictiv Expert Guidance on Automotive Product Development

Isaac Carral

Isaac Carral is a Manager of Industrialization Projects at Fictiv. Isaac has over a decade of experience in motor vehicle and heavy machinery manufacturing. Here are his top tips for automotive and EV part design:

  1. Don’t forget the basics and if you don’t remember them, study them and know them well. These basics include things like vehicle dynamics, basic and advanced battery technologies, electric propulsion, combustion engine mechanics, etc.
  2. Really stay up-to-date on advancements in materials and finishing. Look out for high-performance composites, super alloys, and materials that can manage heat well. Don’t lose the race on material innovations.
  3. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is your ultimate toolkit for both automotive and electric vehicle component design. Correctly managed airflow can significantly impact fuel economy and battery range/performance.
  4. Implement design for manufacturability reviews and any necessary changes early on in the design process. Always design with quality in mind. Don’t sacrifice function for cosmetics.
  5. Master the use of GD&T principles to communicate and control the variability in automotive component manufacturing. Early consideration of tolerance stack-ups is essential for the high-precision assembly required in vehicle manufacturing. Remember that tighter tolerances means higher part cost.
  6. Know your quality standards, such as those from SAE. A lot of OEMs use the standards for critical components or characteristics.
